Students fail algebra because of learning that happens starting in Kindergarten! As we work to improve our math instruction, here are five areas you can help improve with your child to ensure they will be proficient in Math in the future, when the underpinnings of Algebra are really applied in the classroom. 1. Number line: Students need to know where numbers fall. Is it closer to zero or 100? or 1000? Negative numbers are to the left of Zero! 2. Not understanding the Equal sign! The equal sign means: "the same as..." 3. Not understanding place value. The number 374 does not have 7 tens. It has 37 tens. Otherwise, next time I see you I will give you $374 with only 7 ten dollar bills! 4. Fraction concepts 5. The distributive property Ask your student if they have learned about any of these topics. If they have,. ask them to demonstrate them to you!
