Survive learning at home with kids is an online community, from Participate, providing support and resources to families helping their children learn at home. Adults can connect with others during morning coffee chats and afternoon happy hours (while the kids play with Legos!) or on discussion boards. Students can find a full schedule of live external events, such as music workshops, lunchtime art and writing sessions and cooking classes with professional chefs. Plus, tons of ideas for lessons, projects, virtual field trips, establishing new routines and learning spaces and more.

Parent tip of the week: Coping during Shelter in place

Limit consumption of news
  • Consider how much social meeting and local and national news you are consuming.  How much of this is panic inducing?
  • Take a social media hiatus
  • Follow peers that share content that take your mind off the crisis
  • Follow accounts regarding nature, art, baking or crafts.
Stay in touch virtually
  • Daily call and text friends and family
  • Assist your child in calling or texting or even zooming their friends and family.  We did a family zoom with my mother and sisters family last week.

Make plans
  • Virtual play dates?
  • What can your family do that would be fun outside?
  • What are favorite foods you can cook during this time?
  • Make lists that kids can add to. Seeing you problem solve in response to this crisis can be instructive and reassuring for kids.
  • Assign kids tasks that will help them feel that they are part of the plan and making a valuable contribution to the family.
Keep it positive
  •  “School’s closed” are cause for celebration.
  • Validate that feeling of excitement and use it as a springboard to help kids stay calm and happy.
  • It’s cool to have everyone home together. We’re going to have good time!
Accept and ask for help
  • We have meal pick up for breakfasts and lunches each Monday and Thursday
  • If you have a partner at home, agree that you’ll trade off when it comes to childcare. Especially if one or both of you are working from home and have younger children.
  • Everyone who can pitch in, should. Give kids age appropriate jobs. Make their bed, etc!

Keep routines in place
  • Maintain a similar bedtime and wake-up time
  • Maintain regular mealtimes
  • Maintain teeth-brushing, hair-combing, bathing and other hygiene routines.  It really will help kids feel better!
Be creative about new activities — and exercise
  • Try puzzles, painting and board games
  • google activity choice boards in order to mix-up inside exercise
  • find items like boxes, books or cards to stack up and knock over

Manage your own anxiety
  • Maintain routines for yourself as a parent, too.
  • If you feel stressed, they feel stressed
  • Role-model how to calm down when you're stressed out or overwhelmed.
