Parent Tip of the week#105:  Staying calm over the holidays

  • Maintain your relationships to your children- Talk to your kids as much as possible.  Ask them how they are feeling, thinking, and what they are worried about.  Time over the holidays is often busier and shorter.  So each minute counts!
  • Initiate conversations about the season – Not everyone does the holidays the same, and not everyone needs to do the holidays the same.  Talk to your children about why you do what you do in your family.  Talk to them about your family traditions. Invite their opinion of the traditions and see if there is something they want to begin doing as a family that you had never thought of!
  • Set expectations – Make sure you set realistic gift expectations for YOURSELF and your children.  This is a great opportunity to teach your children about over spending and about generosity to others.
  • Take care of yourself – Find time to find your Zen.  Maybe this means more outside fresh air.  Maybe its toga.  Maybe it is your favorite book.  Maybe it is less TV viewing for the kids and more quiet time doing puzzles, coloring, or playing pretend.  Maybe it means watching less news or cable commentators.  Hopefully it all means less stress.

Parent tip of the week #104:  The power of a good nights sleep

11/9/2018

What is your child's bedtime routine like?  Is it the same routine over again, one that tells their body "Oh!  We are getting ready for bed.  It is time to make you feel sleepy".  If the bedtime routine is not a routine, please begin to help your child with a routine.  this is the time of year where, as it's darker outside more often than not, we notice children falling asleep in class, being too tired to learn, and having trouble being grumpy to their classmates because they are sleepy.

Here's how you can help:
  • Limit screen time before bed.  the blue light keeps them awake too long. and It is hard for their mands to stop racing enough to fall asleep
  • Encourage lots of fresh air and exercise.  This will help them sleep better.  even though it is so cold outside!  so dress warmly
  • Go to bed at the same time every night.  Wake up at the same time every morning.  Talk to your child about what the times atre for going to bed and waking up.
  • Keep a bedtime routine.  This might include brushing teeth, hair, reading a book, reciting a favorite poem or song, and chatting quietly about the day.  Try and keep this routine several nights of the week.
  • Avoid using weekends to make up for lost sleep.  Studies show this is not healthy or effective for children.  They really do need 9-11 hours of sleep each night.
